Potential candidates for weight loss surgery should be completely aware that it will transform their life forever. For example, you should be able to carry out daily activities far more easily; your likelihood of developing serious diseases will be reduced; and existing medical conditions may also be alleviated. Despite the fact that weight loss surgery can be expensive, and the time taken to recover can be lengthy, patients should resolve themselves to the realisation of how better off they are considering the prospects of a life with excess weight.

To ensure your recovery is not undermined, you should always follow your surgeon's instructions and stay to the diet plan that has been created for you.

After Surgery Before you can go home, you will be assessed by your consultant who will ask you to move about the room. This is to ensure you are stable enough to carry out walking exercises on your own once you are back at home.

When you leave the hospital, you will need assistance whilst recovering at home. Make sure you have somebody who can help you over the first couple of days, as you will not be able to drive, cook, or wash on your own. If you do not have anybody who can help you during this time, you may be able to arrange help with your hospital, however, you should ensure that this type of support is available during you consultation.

In terms of managing the ensuing pain that comes with all surgical procedures, your surgeon will discuss with you the options available prior to surgery. This may also depend on the type of surgery you are having, whether this is a gastric banding, gastric balloon, or bypass. Local anaesthetic will require less pain relief post-surgery, although general anaesthetics may require stronger relief over a longer period of time.

After about two weeks, you should be able to drive once more and start to return to your normal routine within about six weeks. Of course, if you feel you are not ready to perform certain activities, refrain from doing do until you are comfortable enough. Above all, listen to what your body is telling you.
