A recent study showed that people who enjoy a Mediterranean diet live for an average of three years longer than those of us who subsist on a high-fat, high-carbohydrate Western diet. The secret ingredients that make Mediterranean cuisine so good for you can be found on the menu at most Mallorca hotels: olives and olive oil, oily fish and a huge range of tasty fresh fruit and vegetables. Hotels in Sharm are also a great choice if you'd like to keep your healthy eating regimen going when you're on holiday. But what is it that gives these foods their magic nutritional power?

A diet rich in the antioxidants found in olives and their oil can help protect against certain cancers, as well as keeping the walls of our arteries soft and flexible, helping to prevent heart disease and strokes. Oily fish are a fantastic source of Omega 3 essential fatty acids, which are used by our bodies in repairing and replacing cells, and they are also an excellent source of protein and trace vitamins and minerals. Fresh fruit and veg are packed with nutrients and are an excellent source of dietary fibre, which works its fuller-for-longer magic and helps us to resist reaching for the crisps at sundowner time.

So that's the science stuff - but what does this actually mean you'll find on the menu at Mallorca hotels? If you're expecting a depressing array of health food that will send you dashing out in search of the nearest full English breakfast, think again. Most Mallorca hotels offer a delicious buffet, laden with luscious tropical fruit at breakfast time (and mouthwatering pastries for those who can't resist a sweet treat). The fresh orange juice is excellent, and the coffee is up there with the best in the world.

At lunchtime, you might decide to keep it light, and feast on a selection of delicious salads - the best known is trempo, a spicy tomato-based salsa that's delicious with the local bread. Or try tumbet - if you like ratatouille, you'll love this layered dish of potatoes, aubergines and red peppers, lavishly anointed with that health-giving olive oil. And for dinner, what could be more delicious than a plate piled high with smoky grilled fish fresh from the Mediterranean? Try stuffed squid, succulent grilled prawns or the seemingly endless array of dishes made from traditional bacalao, or salt cod.

Hotels in Sharm serve a similar style of cuisine: grilled fish, lamb and chicken are served with couscous and low-fat, flavour-packed sauces. Falafel are the perfect street food to enjoy on the go, and taste far better than anything you'll find in your local supermarket. Or join the locals and try a plate of ful medames, garlicky fava beans cooked in olive oil, served with flatbread.
